Autumn School in IA

Introduction

The first edition of the Autumn School of the PhD programme in Digital Humanities will focus on the understanding and use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in research. This topic has been chosen for this edition, first of all, as a possible common thread connecting the various disciplines of interest within the PhD programme, and secondly because it provides an opportunity to build, consolidate and share among doctoral students an essential background for those approaching research through the methods and perspectives of the Digital Humanities.

Unlike when it was first introduced in 1955, the term “artificial intelligence” today refers to a wide range of algorithms and models that, since the late 2000s, have progressively entered all areas of contemporary life and society: culture, economy, politics, warfare, and science.

These are tools capable of automatically performing recognition, classification, prediction, analysis and data generation tasks, with countless applications in research. However, besides some technical skills, the proper use of generative AI requires researchers to exercise critical judgement when assessing its outputs, in light of a range of ethical, epistemological, political, and geopolitical issues — including the substantial material and environmental resources demanded by the development and use of AI systems.

Drawing on multiple disciplinary fields, the School aims to provide PhD students in Digital Humanities with an overview of generative AI that includes different perspectives and critical reflections on its use, in order to contribute to the training of more competent and aware researchers.

Proposal

The programme extends over five days and includes lectures and workshops organised in four-hour sessions (morning or afternoon), alternating foundational topics (FON) and advanced research themes (RIC). The focus chosen for this edition is Artificial Intelligence (AI), which serves as a unifying theme across the disciplines involved in the PhD. The main goal is to provide students with a foundational understanding of AI and its potential within research, as well as a shared language for doctoral students who are beginning their research work and who come from diverse disciplinary backgrounds.

When?

The Autumn School on AI will take place from 10 to 14 November 2025 and is open to PhD students from other doctoral programmes. In this case, a registration fee of €200 is required.

Who?

PhD candidates in the Humanities and students enrolled in Master’s degree programmes in Humanities-related disciplines.
